Biography:

Dr Agbugba was raised at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka Campus. During the period of his national service, he was appointed the State President/Chairman, as well as a National Delegate/Representative of a Corpers’ Association, Gombe State Chapter and National Headquarters, Jos, Plateau State, respectively. It is pertinent to note that he specialized in Agricultural Marketing and Agribusiness option, and has carried out researches in this area for years.

His professional and career vision is geared towards contributing to the on-going transformational and developmental initiatives in rural communities, analysis of agricultural systems, natural resource decision-making, and development of teaching and management support tools, as well as identifying and strengthening the capacities and potentials of the rural communities through extension programmes in line with food and agribusiness activities, so as to plan, and implement innovative developmental initiatives which will, to a reasonable extent halve poverty thereby ensuring food security.

Research Interests:

He is a member of the Asia-Pacific Chemical, Biological, Environmental and Engineering Society (APCBEES), Hong Kong, China. Furthermore, he has moderated as well as spoken in international conferences in Nigeria, Malaysia, India, South Africa, USA and Mauritius. Recently, he was selected as an academia/researcher stakeholder in the Feed-the-Future programme of the USAID Global Food Security Strategy Whole-System Workshop, Abuja. On Nov., 2018, he presented a keynote address at the Agriculture, Food and Aqua Conference entitled ‘Smallholder fresh fish marketing enterprise: A veritable livelihood strategy for economic empowerment in sub-Saharan Africa. Moreover, he is the recipient of the ‘Excellence Award’ as ‘Agro-Economist of the year’ in the 2017 Conference of the Pan African Agricultural Journalists (PAAJ) at Ikeja, Lagos State.

Biography:

Associate Professor and Chair of Health Sciences Department at Zayed University in Dubai. I completed my Ph.D in Public Health Nutrition (Ph.D in Medical Sciences) in 2008 from the Faculty of Medicine, Gent University, Belgium. Awarded a doctoral scholarship from Belgian Technical Cooperation (BTC). My Ph.D study was part of the National Study of the Palestinian Health Behaviors in School-aged Children (HBSC-2004). Fulbright Senior Visiting Scholar and did Post-Doctoral studies in Public Health and Nutrition at Jean Mayer Human Nutrition Center, Tufts University, Boston, USA from 2011 to 2012. Served as the director of Public Health Department, Faculty of Medicine, An-Najah University, Palestine from 2009 to 2013. Published numerous number of articles in scientific journals and served as an editorial board member and reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals. Participated in many conferences, courses and research studies in all over the world, including Europe, USA, Canada, West Africa and some Arab countries.

Research Interests:

My first degree in Public Health Nutrition from the Faculty of Medicine/ Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) in 1990. I worked as a nutritionist in a number of hospitals in Amman, Jordan and then at Amman University. From 1995 to 1998, I worked at the Red Crescent Society Maternity Hospital in Ramallah. In 1997, awarded a scholarship for postgraduate masters-level study in Public Health at the Community Health Institute, Birzeit University, Palestine. In 1998, awarded scholarship for a Master of Philosophy in International Community Health and Nutrition in the Faculty of Medicine at Oslo University, Norway. My Master’s thesis title was “Diabetes Self-Management in Rural Palestinian Community.

Until the 31.12.2009 he was Adviser in the Directorate D (Knowledge-based economy) of the Directorate General for Internal Market and Services, European Commission, Brussels (Belgium). He has been for 9 years Head of the Unit "Removal of trade barriers for goods (articles 28 to 30 EC)" also in the Directorate General for Internal Market. From 1982 to 1986, before he joined the European Commission, he was Chief of the Food, Plant and Animal Law Services of FAO, in Rome (Italy). As a result of his professional role and expertise he was elected in 1975 to the Council of the European Food Law Association (EFLA) and in 1996 he was designated “patron” of the association.

He is professor at the Universidad de Girona (Spain), “Pablo de Olavide” de Sevilla, San Antonio de Murcia, de Castilla-La Mancha and of the CEI International Affairs - Universitat de Barcelona. He is also lecturer at the University of Ferrara and the dell'Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale Amedeo Avogadro (Italia).

Mr. Gonzalez Vaqué is at the present time Director of Food and Agrarian Policies of the Triptolemos Foundation (Barcelona).

M.S. Swaminathan

Biography:

Dr. M.S. Swaminathan is one of the world’s leading agricultural scientists. He played a catalytic role in India’s green revolution between 1960 and 1982. From April 1982 to January 1988 he served as Director General of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI).  He also served as the President of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs (2002-07).  President of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) (1984-90). Dr. Swaminathan is currently heading in an honorary capacity a Research Centre at Madras for sustainable agricultural and rural development based on the integration of traditional and frontier technologies. The Centre was set up with the funds associated with the World Food Prize, Tyler Prize and Honda Prize. During 2004-06, Dr Swami Nathan served as Chairman of the National Commission on Farmers (NCF).  This is the first time either on colonial or independent India, that a National Commission on Farmers was set up.  On the basis of the report of NCF, the Government of India announced a National Policy for Farmers in 2007.

Research Interests:

Over a period of 60 years, Dr. Swaminathan has worked in collaboration with scientists and policy makers on a wide range of problems in basic and applied plant genetics and agricultural research and development. Among his more important contributions are: conservation of plant genetic resources, in situ and ex situ conservation of biodiversity, manipulation of genes to improve the yield, quality and stability of wheat, rice and potatoes; identification of the barriers to high yields in wheat and initiation of the dwarf wheat breeding programme; identification of cytotoxic agents in irradiated food material and demonstration of the indirect effects of radiations, organization of the National Demonstration and Lab to Land programmes and management of the 1979 drought as Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of Agriculture.

Biography

Dr. Mohamed El-Esawi is an Associate Professor of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Botany Department of Faculty of Science at Tanta University in Egypt. He has received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from Tanta University in Egypt, and his PhD in Genetics and Molecular Biology from Dublin Institute of Technology, Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) in Ireland. Afterwards, Dr. El-Esawi joined the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom as a Visiting Research Fellow. Then, he joined the University of Sorbonne (Pierre and Marie Curie-UPMC) in France as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Following those positions, Dr. El-Esawi joined the Division of Crop Biotechnics of KU Leuven in Belgium as a Research Fellow. Then, he joined the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom as a Visiting Research Fellow. He has given numerous talks and participated at more than 55 conferences, meetings, and workshops in highly regarded institutions nationally and internationally. He has received several awards and grants from international organizations including DAFF, ASRT, IRO, COST.

Biography

Dr. Shachi Joshi is working as Joint Director at National Institute of Labour Economics Research and Development, functioning under NITI Aayog, Govt. of India. She  holds a Ph.D. Degree in Economics with specialization in Agricultural Economics .She has obtained training in Monitoring & Evaluation from “International Training in Development Evaluation (IPDET)” organized by the World Bank and Carleton University in  Canada. She has over 25 years of  experience of Research in the areas of Agriculture, Vocational Training and Skill Development, Monitoring & Evaluation and Human Resource Planning. She is a teaching faculty and Coordinator of Certificate Programme in Monitoring & Evaluation organized for the participants of Developing Countries and for the Officials of State Government of India.Her recent publication in the field of Agriculture is Technology Transfer to the Farmers and Role of KVKs,Published in “Reflecting on India’s Development Employment, Skill and Health” (ed) NILERD, Springer, 2018.

Biography:

Associate Professor of Health and Animal Production at Agrarian Hight School at Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo in Portugal. He has received his B.Sc. from Veterinary School, Lisbon Technical University and M.Sc. of Animal Production from International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies, Zaragoza, Spain and PhD in Veterinary Sciences from University of Tras-os-Montes e Alto Douro, in Portugal. Coordinator and member of the Centre for Research and Development in Agri-food Systems and Sustainability. Served as Vice-President of Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo, Portugal from 2007 to 2011 and General Director of the Food and Veterinary General Directorate, from 2011 to 2013. Member of the Portuguese Government, as Secretary of State of Food and Agri-food Research, from 2013to 2015. Adviser of companies, municipalities and governments in the area of food and agriculture. Published numerous books, chapters and articles in scientific journals and served as an editorial board member and reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals. Coordinated and participated in many conferences, courses and research studies and received several awards and grants.
